Damon Allen will turn 44 this year! Read that sentence again. And before training camp gets underway the scribes in TO are writing his obituary. Not one but two articles have already been penned outlining Allen’s possible demise. The men after his job are Michael Bishop, Eric Crouch, Mike McMahon and a guy named Tom Arth. More on the battle in the Agros TCT. Now Allen was pulled from both Argo playoff games in favour of Bishop but he does hold every a lot of CFL records. Do you realize Allen is actually a grandfather – four years ago. He finished 16th in the Heisman trophy voting in 1984! The same year Doug Flutie won the award. He was signed by the Eskimos in 1985. His longevity is staggering. Here an excerpt from the National Post article by Bruce Arthur:
“My health is fine,” he says, anticipating an unasked question. As for the competition for his job, the grandfather nods. “It’s the uniqueness of where I am in my career … that’s fine with me. I defeated the odds before. How many quarterbacks you know played 23 years?”
Ah we know of no one Damon. This article could have and is probably written every year for the past 10 years about Allen. I’m sure having the Cup in Toronto this year made Grandpa Allen want to come back and that motivation may just make him the starter.
