The Winnipeg Blue Bombers pr person is using the word “blue chip” verrrry loosely. Normally I wouldn’t care about a team signing training camp fodder but the quote in the lead of the press release was too ridiculous to dismiss.
blue chip: “an outstandingly worthwhile or valuable property or asset or an athlete rated as excellent or as an excellent prospect.”
This is what GM Brendan Taman said about each player:
“Antoine Bagwell is a solid prospect and will bear watching during training camp,” G.M. Brendan Taman said.
“Chris Beckman had a solid career at the U.S. college level and we are anxious to see what he contributes at the pro level,” Taman said.
“Brian Guebert is a non-import player who earned an invite to camp due to the effort and tenacity he displayed in CIS football,” Taman said.
Call me crazy but “bear watching,” “anxious to see” and “earned an invite” don’t sound like ringing endorsements for “blue chip prospects” maybe orange or brown chip is more appropriate. I think the Bomber pr person is a little too pumped for camp or maybe they’re drinking the Blue Kool-Aid. If any of them turn out to be CFL all-stars I’ll eat my hat. Best of luck guys.
